There is a lot of talk about the genius wefts that are hitting the market so I think it’s important to understand the difference between handtied hair from the Indian Temples vs. the genius and micro wefts that are produced in China.
Handtied Indian Hair
- There are no machines involved in creating handtied Indian wefts other than the extra stitch to secure the knots
- It is a religious pilgrimage to donate hair to Indian Temples
- Hair is shaved and put into a ponytail to maintain the integrity of the hair – the cuticle, the color and the natural texture
- The hair is naturally textured and assembled by hand
Genius and Micro Wefts created in China
- Hair is pulled from multiple sources which creates the need to strip off the cuticle
- The color is lightened and then dyed to create the desired color. Next, a wave pattern is created with a perm or straightening is done to chemically remove the wave pattern.
- Wefts are being mass produced
- There is a plastic or rubbery substance used to create the wefts
- Alcohol and heat affects this rubbery layer and breaks down the weft
