There is a lot of talk about the genius wefts that are hitting the market so I think it’s important to understand the difference between handtied hair from the Indian Temples vs. the genius and micro wefts that are produced in China.

handtied vs genius weft

Handtied Indian Hair

  • There are no machines involved in creating handtied Indian wefts other than the extra stitch to secure the knots
  • It is a religious pilgrimage to donate hair to Indian Temples
  • Hair is shaved and put into a ponytail to maintain the integrity of the hair – the cuticle, the color and the natural texture
  • The hair is naturally textured and assembled by hand

Genius and Micro Wefts created in China

  • Hair is pulled from multiple sources which creates the need to strip off the cuticle
  • The color is lightened and then dyed to create the desired color. Next, a wave pattern is created with a perm or straightening is done to chemically remove the wave pattern.
  • Wefts are being mass produced
  • There is a plastic or rubbery substance used to create the wefts
  • Alcohol and heat affects this rubbery layer and breaks down the weft

Don’t believe me? Watch the video where I compare my 18 month old wefts to barely worn genius and micro wefts.
